There are over 12,000 classified species of ants, the ones most commonly found in Baltimore and other parts of Maryland are the pavement, odorous house ant and carpenter ant. Pavement ants are usually 1/4" to 3/8" long and are black or brown in color. They generally nest under rocks, concrete and pavement. Odorous house ants are usually 1/16 to 1/8 inches and are both indoor and outdoor ants. They eat honeydew, which is made by aphids and scale insects, and other sugary foods. Due to the vast variety of food they eat and their commonality, they are a common household ant. Odorous ants do not sting or bite but can become a persistent pests, traveling indoors in huge numbers. Carpenter ants are larger ants usually measuring 1/2" to 3/4" long. They are black colored. These ants make their nests in a tree, stump or log and could have remote colonies inside of structures.
Ants colonies can consists of thousands of ants. These tiny insects can pose a tough challenge for homeowners and businesses because if you don't treat them correctly, they just keep coming back. Worker ants leave pheromone trails for other ants to follow and the queens of some ant species can lay up to 300,000 eggs.
ANT PEST CONTROL
Controlling ants can be tricky as they are elusive creatures and their numbers are large. If the nest is not destroyed, the ants will keep coming back. That's why our ant control service includes the necessary treatments and follow-ups with a 90 day ant free guarantee for one fee. Our treatment methods include the following:
Initial Service - Detailed inspection of the entire structure, identifying areas of activity and entry points. Determining the conditions that are conducive to ant activity, if any. A treatment around the foundation, garage, sidewalks, patios, etc is applied on the exterior. Any nests found will also be treated. Interior of the structure usually gets targeted treatment with gel bait in areas where the ants are foraging. This bait is ingested by the ants, then brought back and spread throughout the colony. The exterior is typically treated using botanical insecticide dust(s), granular baits and non-repellent, residual insecticide.
Follow-up - A follow up service is always scheduled with the carpenter ant service. During this service, a full inspection will be conducted and materials re-applied if needed.

Are ants dangerous?
Pavement and odorous house ants do not pose a public health risk, but they can contaminate food and should be avoided. Carpenter ants damage wood through their nest building. If they gain entry to a structure, they pose a property threat.
Why do I have ants in my home?
Ants are foragers, constantly looking for food. Pavement and odorous house ants will eat almost anything - if it's food and it's on the floor, these ants are sure to find it. Once they do, they leave a pheromone trail so the other ants can find it. This is why it's common to see ant "trails". Carpenter ants mainly attack wood that is or has been wet and damaged by mold. Even though these ants first invade wet, decayed wood, they may soon begin building paths through dry, undamaged wood.
