What Baltimore Homeowners Should Know About American Cockroaches

February 26, 2021

Cockroaches are nocturnal insects that exist throughout the world and gather in spaces that are tight, dark, and warm. They have a flat, oval-shaped frame, six legs, and long antennae. Some types have wings, but most are not capable of flying. Two of the most common types found in this region are the German and American cockroaches. If you suspect your Baltimore property is having issues with either roach, here is what you should know.

The American Cockroach

Despite its name, the American Cockroach (Periplaneta americana) is believed to have originated overseas—likely in Africa. These are larger insects that often exceed 1 ½ inch in length, with red or brown shaded bodies, and they have a yellowish marking on the head. They prefer to hide where there is plenty of warmth and will reproduce by laying small dark sacs that contain eggs.

Common Indoor Activity

Cockroaches will move indoors seeking any combination of shelter, food, or water. These pests are commonly found underneath sinks, behind appliances, and in basements and laundry areas, particularly when there are leaky faucets or pipes. Cockroaches are very opportunistic, will eat just about anything, and are very difficult to eradicate.

The Dangers Of Cockroaches

Cockroaches travel through trash and sewers carrying pathogens, and once inside your property, they will spread these pathogens by contaminating food, shedding their skins, and spreading feces along the way. Some of the dangerous contaminants they spread include salmonellosis, cholera, dysentery, allergens, and countless other troublesome conditions. These pests are capable of biting, but usually don’t do so.

Best Practices For Preventing Cockroaches

Those seeking to deter cockroaches from entering their property should take measures both on the interior and exterior of the structure including:

  • Inspect the exterior foundation of the home to identify any cracks or holes that may potentially allow access and fill them using a durable sealant.
  • Check the condition of the seals around doors and windows and install sweeps and weatherstripping materials as needed.
  • Exterior vents should have screens or a similar type of resistant barrier covering them.
  • Promptly remove crumbs, clean up spills, and do not leave dirty dishes in the sink overnight.
  • Food should always be placed in sealed containers or the refrigerator and uneaten pet food removed.
  • Trash containers outside and in the kitchen should have tightly fitting lids.

How To Respond To An Intrusion From Cockroaches

Property owners must avoid the mistakes that many others make when they recognize that cockroaches have infiltrated their home. Retailers market do-it-yourself products such as bait stations, acidic powders, and aerosol sprays. These options generally produce limited results, are unable to fully eradicate infestations, and may be hazardous to your health.

Reach out to a licensed pest control professional that will thoroughly inspect the premises and create a comprehensive plan that will eliminate the problem. They will also assess any interior or exterior property conditions that must be addressed to prevent future invasions.
