What It Takes To Get Rid Of A Cockroach Infestation In Your Baltimore Home

October 10, 2022

Cockroaches are ugly and annoying, but that is the least of the concerns regarding them. These insects have a reputation for carrying and spreading germs, and if they get inside your home, it’s possible they can make you sick. In addition, some species can damage personal belongings. Considering they quickly multiply in significant numbers, pest control in Baltimore is required to conquer them.

Many people will instantly think about purchasing cockroach control products when there’s an infestation. However, this may not be the best course of action. Find out what elimination approaches are effective, and which aren’t. Pest Czar can guide you on how to keep cockroaches away.

Clear Signs Of A Cockroach Infestation

One reason why complications with cockroaches get out of hand is that people don’t know how to recognize their signs. The most apparent clue is seeing cockroaches in the daytime, as most are active after the sun goes down. Further signs of cockroaches in your home are:

  • Fecal smudges and droppings: Cockroach excrement is usually dark. It might be oval-shaped with blunt ends, or peppery. Search drawers, surfaces, floor corners, and door frames.
  • Odors: These pests give off secretions and use bodily chemicals to communicate. Both have a musty scent. These substances are potent enough to affect the taste and smell of food, too.
  • Shed skin: A cockroach’s exoskeleton protects the body until adulthood. You may find pieces of the removed shell.
  • Eggs and casings: These are about an inch long or less, and they resemble capsules. They’re tan, black, red, or brown.

American, German, and Oriental cockroaches are three species that frequent the area. American cockroaches are a mix of brown and red, and 1 ¼ to 2 ⅛ inches long. German cockroaches are brown or tan and ½ to ⅝ of an inch. They can fly, but they run more often. Oriental cockroaches are glossy and black, and about 1 inch long. While they have wings, they don't fly, and are often known as “water bugs.”

The Dangers Roaches Bring Into The Home

Like many other pests, cockroaches go into filthy areas like gutters or dumpsters. As you might imagine, they’ll crawl away with germs. On their legs are spines that can stick to things, which will pick up bacteria and other pathogens as they travel. Moreover, their saliva and waste has microbes, so there’s a chance your food, tables, counters, shelves, and more will be tainted by cockroaches. Some of the illnesses that cockroaches can spread include dysentery, gastroenteritis, and salmonellosis, among other conditions.

Why Do-It-Yourself Cockroach Control Often Fails

Over-the-counter insecticides and baits are not a good way to get rid of cockroaches. Sprays and such can be very toxic, and still not enough to hinder an infestation, and so many bugs can be killed at a time with baits. Cockroaches often nest in spots that are challenging to access, so without proper knowledge of their habits, it's unlikely DIY methods will eliminate an entire infestation.
