Home invasions happen every day, and for most homeowners, it happens right under their noses. Of course, we are not talking about burglars but rather about much smaller invaders known as cockroaches. Unlike a human thief, cockroaches don’t need fancy lock-picking tools or hacking skills to get into your house. All they need is a small crack or gap, and they will get past all of your home's defenses. Roaches may be hiding somewhere in your house right now, as you read this.
The Two Types Of Cockroaches Here In D.C.
In D.C., we have two different species of cockroach. The German roach, and the American roach. Here are some key differences between them:
- German cockroaches are small, only a half an inch long, while American roaches can grow to be upwards of two inches in length.
- American roaches are reddish-brown and have thoraxes edged in faded yellow while German cockroaches are tan with parallel, dark lines that run from their heads to the ends of their wings.
Both of these pests love warmth and moisture; however, German cockroaches prefer kitchens and bathrooms, while American roaches are more likely to be found in basements, crawlspaces, and inside or around drains.
German cockroaches are more common invaders in D.C., so it is more likely for you to find them in your home over American roaches.
Are Cockroaches Dangerous?
If you are afraid of cockroaches because you think they might bite or sting you, don’t be. Cockroaches do not have sharp teeth or stingers. They do, however, spread a wide range of diseases and bacteria that could get you and your family very sick. They also shed, and this shedding releases particulates into the air and can cause severe asthma attacks.
Simple Preventative Measures For Roaches
Seal up the entry points in your home’s exterior.
Make sure your window screens are in good working condition.
Check your gutters to make sure they are properly channeling water away from your home.
Clean regularly, including places you might typically miss such as under refrigerators and stoves where cockroaches might hide.
Store all leftover foods inside of sealed plastic containers.
