September is Blood Cancer Awareness Month! For every new customer that we service this month, Pest Czar will donate $5 to HopeWell Cancer Support. This local organization provides information, resources and support for people with cancer and their loved ones.
Blood cancer awareness is important to Pest Czar as Co-Owner Erika Milenkovic was diagnosed with DLBCL non-Hodgkins lymphoma last May, the same kind of cancer our Maryland Governor Larry Hogan had. Her symptoms started with a cough, then suddenly included swelling of the face, neck and arms, and dizziness due to a mass located in her chest. "I'd like people to know that even if they have been healthy their whole life, do not wait to see a doctor if you feel that something is wrong," said Erika. "My symptoms at first seemed minor even to nurses and doctors, but after a while, I knew something was very wrong. I had clues early on that my cough was not normal because I would always cough a lot doing certain workouts, but since the cough seemed to go away at other times, I thought I could ignore it. Only after I started having swelling and dizziness did I start to worry about my health. Please do not ignore 'minor' symptoms that you can't explain." Erika will soon complete her chemotherapy treatments and then will undergo radiation.
Throughout this month, Pest Czar will be posting facts about blood cancer. Did you know, the most common types of blood cancer are leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, myelodysplastic syndromes, and myeloproliferative neosplasms? Learn more about blood cancer here.
