SPIDERS

For the most part, spiders living outside are incredibly beneficial as they provide natural pest control against a variety of common insects. Spider extermination is generally only recommended if their presence indoors is intolerable or if harmful species are present. Where spider populations are persistent, it is standard protocol to implement spider control and prevent their entry as a measure of health and comfort for occupants. Some prevention methods include removing existing webbing, correcting moisture issues and food sources (tending to current pest issues). There are over 30,000 classified species of spiders. The house spider is the most common type of spider that you will find living in your home. They are usually a yellowish color with a dirty white abdomen and some dark spots on the top of their body. They will range in size from 3/16 to 5/16 of an inch. They are commonly found in Baltimore and throughout the rest of Maryland. Other common spiders include: cellar, wolf and black widow spiders.
ARE SPIDERS DANGEROUS?
The venom of a black widow spider is a neuro-toxin and is used as a defense. Black widow spiders do not bite humans instinctively. Most other spiders in our area do not pose a significant risk. The common house spider is not dangerous. They are considered a nuisance pest when they establish unsightly webs in the corners of rooms and other areas of the house but do not cause any harm to humans.
WHY DO I HAVE SPIDERS?
No real reason. Most homes and businesses in our area experience spiders on their premises primarily during the summer months when insect levels are high.
